With this recognition of curved space in 1905 the
Gutenberg galaxy was officially dissolved. With the end of lineal
specialisms and fixed points of view, compartmentalized
knowledge became as unacceptable as it had always been
irrelevant. But the effect of such a segregated way of thinking
has been to make science a departmental affair, having no
influence on eye and thought except indirectly through its
